Vietnamese officials are facing prosecution for alleged bribery linked to the repatriation of Vietnamese citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Public Security has submitted a report to the Supreme People’s Court requesting the trial of 54 officials for bribe-taking, bribe-giving, brokering bribes, abusing positions and powers, and fraudulently confiscating property. The case relates to Vietnam’s repatriation flight scheme during the pandemic. According to reports, some travel companies bribed officials for approval to organize repatriation flights, as Vietnamese nationals had to buy expensive air tickets and undergo difficult procedures to return home. Police claim that officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs created “interest groups” to harass travel agencies and demand bribes. Thirteen officials received a total of $3.5 million in bribes, including To Anh Dung, a former deputy foreign minister who allegedly received $917,000 in bribes to endorse repatriation flights. In January, Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc resigned due to violations made by officials under his supervision during his tenure.
