The Canadian government is planning to introduce new legislation to combat modern-day slavery, which has surprised Liberal MP John McKay, who has been championing a bill on forced labour in parliament. The bill in question, S-211, aims to revise the country’s laws on child and forced labour in supply chains, and would require Canadian firms to scrutinize their supply chains to safeguard workers, by making sure none of their products or components are made in sweatshops employing child or forced labour. McKay explained that this requirement is in light of what is politically possible, and says that the reporting obligation would provide transparency that would allow consumers and bankers to pressure corporations. Meanwhile, Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan’s intention behind the new legislation is that firms and governments act when they identify instances of forced labour, and the aim will be to remove forced labour from Canadian supply chains with a strong law.
