Former Ontario cabinet minister Michael Chan and Senator Victor Oh were among the signatories of a letter sent by an Ontario-based Chinese-Canadian business association to a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) official in 2020. The letter pledged the association’s continued support of China’s efforts to fight COVID-19 and promote its image. The CCP official had written a letter to the president of the Jiangsu Commerce Council of Canada (JCCC), which urged the JCCC to enhance its connections as a Chinese diaspora association to promote a positive image of Beijing’s pandemic response. The JCCC has over 1,000 members in the business, government, and academic communities. Jiang Rui, its president, has also held positions in organizations associated with the CCP.
