The U.S. Justice Department has initiated an investigation into the suspected leak of confidential Pentagon documents that allegedly revealed U.S. and NATO aid to Ukraine, as well as troop positions and armament details, which were widely distributed on social media platforms such as Twitter and Telegram. On these platforms, documents dated between February 23 and March 1 appeared to reveal maps and information about weapon deliveries. Some of the documents were marked “Secret” and “Top Secret” and revealed locations of Russian and Ukrainian military units and artillery guns. Bellingcat analyst Aric Toler posted images on Twitter suggesting that the documents may have been manipulated, as in one case, data with significantly lower Russian troop fatality numbers than publicly-estimated figures were shown. Russia’s manipulation of certain facts has led some to speculate that they might be behind the leak. Some believe the leak was deliberately carried out by someone who aimed to damage the Ukraine, U.S. and NATO efforts. The DOJ has announced an investigation into the matter. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the chief of Ukraine’s presidential office, has said that the posts resembled a Russian disinformation campaign to spark doubts about Ukraine’s predicted counter-offensive.
