Uganda has implemented the “Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023”, which includes a death penalty in some cases. Over 30 of Africa’s 54 countries already criminalise homosexuality, with Uganda’s colonial-era law making sexual activity “against the order of nature” a criminal offence. The new law includes provisions for life imprisonment for the violation of the law, imprisonment for promoting homosexuality and for attempted homosexuality. Foreign officials as well as activists have condemned the law, with US President Joe Biden calling for its repeal and threatening sanctions. The UK and Norway also criticised the law, while some African officials support it.
