The AUKUS coalition, made up of Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, announced a significant breakthrough in AI technology. During a trial in Upavon, the alliance achieved several world-first breakthroughs with jointly made AI technology, including live retraining while models were in flight and the interchange and use of AI models on the three nations’ uncrewed aerial vehicles. The breakthrough is part of the AUKUS Pact’s Pillar II, which aims to accelerate collective knowledge on a variety of cutting-edge technologies and capabilities such as AI and autonomy technologies. The trilateral partners are now seeking to push these technologies into all three nations’ military capabilities to increase their response time to threats. The capability will enable both Australia and the U.S. to maintain “collective multi-domain awareness, operate seamlessly with our allies and partners, and enhance deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.”
