Typhoon Mawar hit Japan’s southern islands causing severe disruption to domestic flights. Over 300 flights have been canceled, and 52 ferry services have been stopped, while many rail lines were shut down due to the storm moving east of Okinoerabujima over the Pacific Ocean, as per Japan’s Transport Ministry. The residents of vulnerable areas are warned about potential flooding and landslides. At least eight people were injured in Okinawa prefecture due to strong winds. Kochi, Wakayama, and Nara prefecture have been issued a heavy rain advisory as bands of thick thunderclouds were forming. Residents in these areas have been advised to evacuate for their safety and be alert for flooding. The typhoon weakened to tropical storm strength from its earlier super typhoon status, which wreaked havoc on Guam last week. Only 28 percent of power has been restored in Guam after being struck by the powerful Category 4 storm. Taiwan and the Philippines were largely spared from the typhoon’s path, except for heavy rains in the northern part of the Philippines and waves crashing in Taiwan’s east coast.
