The United States and South Korea jointly issued a cybersecurity advisory against Kimsuky, a hacking group from North Korea, accused of stealing advanced information related to the country’s satellite development. The advisory was issued after the recent failure of North Korea’s military spy satellite launch, for which South Korea also imposed sanctions on Kimsuky. The South Korean Foreign Ministry has alleged that Kimsuky obtained classified information from individuals and institutions in national defense, security, and diplomacy and submitted it to the North Korean regime. Kimsuky has been reportedly operating under the Reconnaissance General Bureau, North Korea’s military intelligence agency, since 2012. The advisory states that North Korean cyber actors have been using “social engineering” tactics to hack research centers, academic institutions, and news organizations. The advisory warns of Kimsuky actors posing as law enforcement officials or investigative agencies to trick victims into believing that their email accounts have been part of some illegal activities. Following the failed launch of North Korea’s spy satellite, Kim Yo Jong, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister, announced that North Korea’s military reconnaissance satellite would be launched soon. She also vowed to increase spy capabilities and intensify the development of war deterrents. The United States has called on all countries to condemn the launch and to urge North Korea to engage in constructive dialogues.
