The recent tornado in central Burma, also known as Myanmar, caused the deaths of eight people and destroyed over 200 houses. Aung Myin Kone and Tadau villages, located on Naypyitaw’s southern outskirts, were hit by the tornado at around 6:10 p.m. on Friday. The Doh Lewe charity organization transported 128 individuals to hospitals, while 232 houses in the two villages were demolished. During the summer and pre-monsoon periods, lower parts of Myanmar usually see frequent tornadoes of a smaller size that rarely cause death and significant damage. Though Burma undergoes intense weather annually during monsoon season, major tornadoes are uncommon. In 2008, Cyclone Nargis resulted in the loss of over 138,000 lives. On Saturday, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, the head of Burma’s military-based government, visited the affected regions and provided support to the residents. The incident reportedly destroyed two Buddhist monasteries and a small clinic.
