Ontario MPP Vincent Ke is seeking financial support for a defamation lawsuit against Global News, following the broadcaster’s reporting accusing him of involvement in a Chinese Communist Party election interference scheme. Ke’s lawyers served a libel notice to Global News and its journalist after they published a false and defamatory article, according to a press release. Global News claimed in its article that Ke acted as a financial intermediary, receiving $50,000 from the Chinese Consulate in Toronto, which was part of the larger sum that was passed through intermediaries. Ke resigned from Premier Doug Ford’s government to become an independent after the allegations were made. Ke is using WeChat to fundraise for his lawsuit, with a friend opening a trust account to receive donations.
