Seven men, including a father and his two sons, have been charged with attempting to murder a senior Northern Ireland police officer, Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell. Caldwell was shot multiple times outside a sports complex in Omagh, Co Tyrone in February while coaching a youth football match with his son. The dissident republican group called New IRA has claimed responsibility for the attack, with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) investigating whether the group received help from a criminal gang. The accused were remanded in custody and appeared via videolink in Dungannon Magistrates’ Court, with three of them applying for bail. MI5 representatives reportedly approached one of the accused while in police custody. The judge refused bail for all three applicants on the grounds of potential interference with the police investigation and risk of further offending. The seven accused will appear before Omagh Magistrates’ Court on June 27 via videolink.
