The Reclaiming Canada Conference in Victoria brought together a diverse group of citizens to discuss a new vision for the future of the country. Former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Brian Peckford delivered a keynote address at the conference, emphasizing the need for unified efforts to restore Canada’s democracy. He also urged Canada to resist any international agreements that would threaten its sovereignty, emphasizing Canada’s unique cultural identity and heritage as essential components of national identity. The conference’s organizers, We Unify, aim to strengthen Canadian democracy, defend against new threats, and repair existing political and societal dissonance. Participants included journalists, doctors, lawyers, politicians, and freedom activists who discussed topics ranging from debt reduction, transparency in politics, judicial reform, and civic education. B.C. Conservative Party leader John Rustad warned that Canada is on the verge of falling apart unless citizens renew confederation and coalesce around values of truth. Victoria-based lawyer Umar Sheikh spoke about the need for a different model to represent those affected by COVID-19 vaccine mandates as lost livelihoods led to three suicides among groups he represented, for which he spearheaded what he called a “karmic retainer.”
