Today, Albertans are heading to the polls to vote for their preferred party: the United Conservative Party (UCP) or the New Democrat Party (NDP) led by Rachel Notley. UCP leader Danielle Smith, who took over the position less than a year ago after Jason Kenney stepped down, is in a tough race with Notley, the official opposition leader. The UCP has been in power since 2019, winning 63 seats to the NDP’s 24, with a party requiring 44 seats in the Alberta legislature for a majority. The election has boiled down to a race between the UCP and NDP, with no other parties forecasted to win any seats. Voting day comes after a record-breaking number of Albertans cast their ballots early this year, with over 758,500 voting in advanced polls between May 23 and 27. Both Smith and Notley have already voted and have pushed their legislative priorities should they win the election. Results will begin to be available after 8 pm MDT on the Elections Alberta website following the conclusion of the election.
