Jagmeet Singh, Leader of the New Democratic Party, announced that the party intends to present a non-binding motion in the Canadian House of Commons asking David Johnston, the special rapporteur on foreign election interference, to resign. Singh cited Johnston’s “clear appearance of bias” and recent reports of one of his key advisors donating to the Liberal Party as examples. The motion will also call for the government to conduct its investigation into foreign election interference in a way that reinstills confidence in the electoral system and for an independent public inquiry into election interference. Johnston recently recommended holding public hearings to address possible foreign interference instead of a public inquiry into meddling by Beijing due to the confidential nature of intelligence information that would need to be presented. Johnston received criticism from all federal opposition parties for his decision and for an issued report stating that his key advisor appeared to have made donations to the Liberal Party of Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended Johnston’s decision and expressed his continued confidence in Johnston’s work as special rapporteur.
