The Vancouver Police were sent to a tent encampment on the Downtown Eastside with the mission to shut it down. The City of Vancouver requested police assistance in taking down all tents and structures remaining in the area due to the growing public safety risk posed by the encampment. The city’s statement mentioned over 400 outdoor fires occurring in the last eight months, with four people injured this year. The fires and the accumulation of materials and propane tanks have made the situation precarious, and the Vancouver police have reported a nine percent increase in assaults in the area since the encampment began. The release suggests accepting shelter offers as a safer option than sheltering in an entrenched encampment. About 80 tents and structures still exist at the site, and the city has already removed 600 tents and makeshift buildings.
