Canada has joined a global network of countries aiming to streamline regulations to accelerate the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and MP Leslyn Lewis has requested details from the government about the country’s involvement in the World Economic Forum’s “Agile Nations” network. The network aims to promote new technologies such as gene editing and artificial intelligence. The Treasury Board, which manages the Agile Nations file, revealed that Canada was invited to participate in the panel on Agile Governance for the Post-Pandemic World by the OECD, and that discussions were held with the WEF to co-host a high-level panel with a small group of governments and businesses. The initiative resulted in participating countries signing the non legally-binding Agile Nations Charter in November 2020, and Canada is involved in seven projects within the network, including the development of digital ID and the internet of things. MP Lewis has criticized the streamlining of regulations under the Agile Nations framework, stating that it avoids parliamentary oversight.
