Japan’s northernmost main island of Hokkaido experienced a magnitude 6.2 earthquake on Sunday, but there were no reports of damage or injuries. The Japanese Meteorological Agency reported that the quake, which struck at 6:54 p.m., was 136 kilometers deep and hit the southwestern part of Hokkaido, shaking much of the island. The agency warned inhabitants to brace themselves for future strong temblors that could follow over the next few days, as well as for potential landslides. Although local train and subway services were delayed and a temporary closure of the freeway, no disruptions were reported at nuclear plants or power supplies and bullet trains running in northern Japan. Parts of northern Honshu, the largest island in Japan where Tokyo is located, were also shaken but the capital was not affected. Japan, one of the most earthquake-prone nations in the world.
