Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has announced that his party plans to introduce a private member’s bill that would prevent mass murderers like Paul Bernardo from being moved into medium-security prisons before completing their full sentences. The proposed legislation, which is to be introduced by Tory MP Tony Baldinelli, would require all mass murderers to remain in maximum security while serving their sentences. The bill comes in response to the Correctional Service of Canada’s decision to transfer Bernardo to a medium-security institution in Quebec. Poilievre and others have criticized the move, saying it puts others in danger and causes further harassment for the families of victims. Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino also called the decision “incomprehensible.” Poilievre is urging Canadians to contact the Prime Minister’s office to support Baldinelli’s bill.
