The children who survived 40 days in the Amazon jungle have revealed some of the hardships they experienced after the plane they were travelling in with their mother crashed. Though their mother survived the crash for several days, she eventually passed away. The children, who are members of the Huitoto Indigenous group, were discovered living off cassava flour and seeds and with some knowledge of the rainforest’s fruits. The eldest surviving child, Lesly Jacobombaire Mucutuy, has stated that their mother asked them to leave the wreckage site to survive. Though they are currently recovering in hospital, some of the children have already expressed an interest in being more active. Their rescue is being celebrated as an achievement for the Indigenous population and a demonstration of the effectiveness of combining Western and traditional techniques.
