The Greens are standing firm in their requests for renters as discussions continue on the proposed multibillion-dollar housing fund by the federal government. The government’s $10 billion housing future fund legislation is set to hit the Senate during the upcoming sitting fortnight. The funds would generate returns that will help subsidise 30,000 affordable homes, with earnings capped at $500 million a year. The Greens have been blocking the fund in hopes of obtaining more government ambition. Greens housing spokesperson Max Chandler-Mather said the party had made some concessions and was now waiting on Labor to compromise. The party is willing to budge on the total sum going towards affordable and social housing but wants some kind of limitation on rent increases. Chandler-Mather said they would consider national caps on rent hikes instead of a rent freeze. The government claims to have made concessions with the crossbench and that discussions are ongoing. The fund is not the only response to the issue; the federal government has opened up more funding to the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation for 7,000 new social and affordable homes.
