A Vancouver family, well-regarded for their philanthropy, is donating $20 million to a substance use treatment centre in British Columbia in memory of their late family member who passed away due to opioid overdose. According to Jill Diamond, Executive Director of Vancouver’s Diamond Foundation and Steven Diamond’s sister, her brother may still be alive today if he received the same care offered by St. Paul’s Hospital which the family hopes to support through this donation. The family expects to attend a news conference in Vancouver to discuss their donation, which will help fund the hospital’s Road to Recovery program. This program seeks to address treatment gaps and provide a comprehensive range of treatment services in a single location. Steven Diamond was known as a generous addictions counsellor and massage therapist, but despite long periods of sobriety had a long struggle with substance use disorder. He was on a waitlist to see an addiction psychiatrist in 2016 when he passed away a week before his appointment. The donation is expected to provide much-needed support to the Road to Recovery program announced by Premier David Eby in March, which aims to create a seamless recovery program, beginning with the Rapid Access Addiction Clinic and ending with out-patient treatment. The first stage of the program is set to launch this fall.
