According to U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby, there are no intentions to involve Canada in the AUKUS security pact between Australia, the UK, and the United States. AUKUS aims to collaborate on defense technology, including electronic warfare, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies, with a specific focus on countering China’s military presence in the Indo-Pacific region. However, Kirby stated that AUKUS is primarily focused on assisting Australia in developing nuclear-powered submarines, with no plans to expand beyond that or include Canada. Despite this, the Canadian Joint Operations Command raised concerns over Canada’s exclusion from the pact. While Kirby acknowledges the importance of AI technology and other advanced technologies, he noted that the United States already works well with Canada through the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Furthermore, AUKUS partners have announced a global breakthrough in AI technology, which is crucial in countering the Chinese Communist Party’s (CPP) military capabilities. A report by an Australian think tank emphasized the significance of AUKUS in countering the CCP’s advancements in technology and military power. Kirby warned that tensions with the Chinese military could lead to real conflict if incidents such as the recent unsafe maritime interaction between a Chinese warship and American USS Chung-Hoon continue.
