Former Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Nicola Sturgeon spoke publicly for the first time since her husband, Peter Murrell, was questioned regarding the party’s financial affairs. Murrell, previously the SNP’s chief executive, was arrested in connection with a Police Scotland investigation into the spending of approximately £600,000 ($749,000) raised by the SNP to support its campaign for Scottish independence. Police also searched several addresses, including Sturgeon and Murrell’s home in Glasgow. In a statement outside her home, Sturgeon pledged to fully cooperate with the police investigation but asked reporters to respect privacy. The investigation into the SNP’s finances began in July 2021, following complaints about how donations given to the party for use in a new independence referendum campaign had been used. Murrell’s arrest came within a week after Sturgeon stepped down as Scotland’s first minister.
