In Ottawa on September 25, 2022, members of the Iranian community and their allies gathered in support of protesters in Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody. Amini was allegedly arrested for not properly wearing a hijab. The Canadian government has imposed new sanctions on Iranian officials responsible for Amini’s arrest, which sparked widespread demonstrations against the regime. The sanctions include a travel ban and asset freeze on nine individuals and one prison accused of gross and systematic human rights violations. Four members of the morality police, who are believed to have been involved in Amini’s arrest, are among those targeted by the sanctions. The list also includes the regional head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for Sistan and Baluchestan, which has brutally suppressed protests. Additionally, Gohardasht Prison, also known as Rajaei Shahr, where the state has executed people, and the senior leadership of drone company Paravar Pars, which is alleged to have provided weapons to support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, are subject to sanctions. These sanctions are the eleventh imposed by Canada on Iran since the fall of 2021.
