A committee of MPs has urged the UK government to take action in order to facilitate the development of a new nuclear power station in Wales. In a report, the Welsh Affairs Committee called on ministers to provide a “concrete commitment” to the proposed Wylfa Newydd project in North Wales, and make financial and land ownership agreements to enable it to proceed. The report claims that the development, which would cost £20bn ($27bn) and create 10,000 jobs during construction, is crucial for the government to meet its goal of nuclear energy meeting up to 25% of UK electricity demand, approximately 24 GW, by 2050. Campaigners against the scheme argue that cheaper and safer renewable alternatives should be used.
