Brazilian authorities have conducted a raid on the home of former President Jair Bolsonaro, arresting his trusted aides and seizing his mobile phone as part of an investigation into his COVID-19 vaccination records. The investigation aims to clarify how Bolsonaro, who had previously declared that he would not take the COVID-19 vaccine, was registered as vaccinated in health documents released in February. Reports indicate that federal police discovered evidence of tampering with Bolsonaro’s vaccine records in late December, preceding his travel to the United States, where most foreign visitors are required to be vaccinated. Bolsonaro confirmed the raid on his home to journalists, denied his involvement in document forgery and stated that his phone was seized. Targeting his vaccine records is one of several investigations putting pressure on the former conservative leader, who has denied any wrongdoing. Federal police served 16 search warrants and six arrest warrants, including Bolsonaro’s personal assistant Mauro Cid, his personal security officers Max Guilherme and Sergio Cordeiro, on allegations of falsifying vaccine records. Police are investigating a scheme to insert fraudulent data into a national COVID-19 database to bypass restrictions and exhibited “ideological” motives against COVID vaccination.
