The Canadian Senate in Ottawa witnessed Senators sitting at a physical distance as they listened to Governor General Julie Payette at the Senate of Canada Building while she delivered the Speech from the Throne on September 23, 2020. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the appointment of two new Senators to join the upper chamber. A former auditor general of Prince Edward Island with over 40 years of experience in legislative auditing, Jane MacAdam, will represent that province. Entrepreneur, Iris Petten, with experience in the fishing industry, will serve as a representative for Newfoundland and Labrador. Trudeau had set up the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, a merit-based and independent process, during his tenure. MacAdam and Petten were recommended through this process, and with their appointments, 68 individuals have been appointed to the Senate. However, 14 Senate seats remain vacant.
