Home Secretary Suella Braverman has claimed that illegal immigrants are contributing to crime and prostitution in the UK. She made these remarks ahead of the successful passing of the Illegal Migration Bill in Parliament. Braverman stated that those who enter the UK illegally via the English Channel have “values at odds with our country.” She also highlighted a rise in criminal activities such as drug dealing and exploitation. Braverman defended her claims by stating that she gathered the information from police chiefs. However, Amnesty International UK’s refugee and migrant rights director, Steve Valdez-Symonds, criticized her remarks, calling them “appallingly divisive and shamelessly intended to stoke fear and hatred of people seeking refuge in this country.” The bill proposes detaining illegal immigrants and promptly returning them to their home country or a safe third country, such as Rwanda. The legislation will face scrutiny in the Lords and a court ruling is expected on Thursday regarding the Rwanda plan.
