An Australian rare book auction will feature a first-edition copy of the beloved children’s classic Winnie the Pooh alongside other literary treasures. The book by Alan Alexander Milne includes the original green cloth cover with gilt illustrations and Christopher Robin’s map of the ‘Hundred Acre Wood’. The University of Queensland’s book fair will auction off Milne’s books, as well as several hundred rare works noted for their historical significance, rarity, and quality of printing and binding. Works from renowned naturalists and explorers will also be available for purchase.
Poet and editor of Bard Owl Publishing and Communications, Andrew Benson Brown, noted that Alan Alexander Milne’s Winnie the Pooh captures the essence of both childhood hope and grown-up wistfulness more than any other author. The fictional characters of Winnie the Pooh have been used to introduce the basic principles of Taoist philosophy in The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff. Hoff regards Pooh’s simpleminded nature, unsophisticated worldview, and instinctive problem-solving methods as expressing a deeper wisdom.
The annual fundraiser event is organised by book enthusiasts to raise funds for student scholarships and research. The recycled books are given new life, and the proceeds go towards supporting students, researchers, and educators. Winnie the Pooh has been enjoyed by presidents, business leaders, and even royalty, including the UK’s Prince Louis, who reportedly received a first-edition Pooh book as a christening gift from Prince Harry.
