The President of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Catherine Tait, attempted to arrange a meeting with Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre to discuss the party’s “Defund the CBC” campaign. After Poilievre rejected her request for a meeting, Tait sent a follow-up letter expressing her disappointment. The letter referenced the false accusations of bias made against CBC journalists by the Conservative Party and the party’s use of the campaign to generate fundraising. The CBC received over $1.2 billion in funding from the federal government in the last year and Tait warned that defunding the CBC could have implications for the country and its economy. The CBC halted its activity on Twitter after the social media platform labeled it as “government-funded media” at the request of Poilevre, and did not resume activity until the label was removed.
