The new Chinese ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, has published open letters in both English and Chinese on the embassy’s official website, calling on Chinese students and compatriots to work with the embassy to serve the Communist regime and improve US-Sino relations as defined by Xi Jinping. He invoked nationalistic and ethnic sentiments, urging Chinese-Americans and expats to act as a bridge connecting the two nations, offering invitations to visit China and assurances that modernization is a boon to both the Chinese people and the world. The call comes shortly after the arrest of Chinese Americans working for the Communist regime in the US, for violating US laws. Xie made it clear that his top priority is “to safeguard China’s interests,” and he is known for his behind-the-scenes work in striking deals with US politicians. While he hopes US and Chinese think tanks can help bring relations back on track, some analysts believe that the structural confrontation between democracy and communism makes it difficult to make substantial changes in the relationship between China and the US.
