The Department of Defense has announced the United States will provide Ukraine with an additional $300 million in military aid to support its “critical security and defense needs” during the ongoing conflict with Russia. The aid includes weaponry such as ammunition for HIMARS, Howitzers, TOW missiles, anti-tank rifles, Hydra-70 rockets, small arms, and demolition munitions. This marks the 37th time the Biden administration has drawn from Pentagon stocks for Ukraine since August 2021 and brings the total U.S. military aid to Ukraine to roughly $36 billion. However, some Republican lawmakers have expressed concern that the aid could escalate the war. During this aid announcement, the Pentagon also noted it will continue to work with allies and partners to provide Ukraine with the “capabilities to meet its immediate battlefield needs and longer-term security assistance requirements.” Meanwhile, Ukraine is preparing for its upcoming spring offensive to retake territory captured earlier by Russia, including Crimea. The country’s defense minister has mentioned receiving state-of-the-art systems from the United States but noted it is still waiting for Abrams tanks. Russia recently accused Ukraine of a “pre-planned terrorist action” after drones launched an attack on the Kremlin, but Ukraine’s president denied these allegations.
