French oil giant TotalEnergies is suing Greenpeace and Factor-X over allegations of underreporting greenhouse gas emissions in 2019. TotalEnergies, which has pledged to be “net zero” by 2050, has faced criticism from climate change protestors and activist investors for continued investments in oil and gas projects. Greenpeace and Factor-X accused TotalEnergies of emitting 1.64 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2019, rather than the 455 million tonnes reported by the company. TotalEnergies has accused the groups of double-counting emissions and using dubious methodologies. The first procedural hearing will take place on Sept. 7.
