Due to safety concerns raised by Victoria Police and protests from local families, a “drag storytime” event planned by a Melbourne council for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia has been cancelled. The event, which aimed to spread the message of “equality and appreciation of diversity,” was set to take place at the Oakleigh Library and invite families to sign up children aged one to six for a morning of stories and songs hosted by Lisa and a “special guest,” Sam T. Concerns over the use of ratepayer money and the appropriateness of the content for young children were among the reasons for the protests. The Boroondara City Council in Melbourne also cancelled a similar event.
