The UK government is currently in talks after reports emerged that three British men are being held by the Taliban in Afghanistan, as confirmed by the home secretary. One of the men, Kevin Cornwell, 53, a charity medic from Middlesbrough, has been named by the Presidium Network, a UK-based non-profit organisation, who are also assisting Cornwell and another unnamed British man that were detained on January 11. Miles Routledge is confirmed as the third Briton being held by the Taliban. Routledge, 23, a British holidaymaker from Birmingham, gained widespread attention and criticism on social media in August 2021, having travelled to Afghanistan despite the Taliban’s rapid military advances across the nation. Scott Richards, co-founder of the Presidium Network, confirmed that the men are in good health and being treated well, and that they are being held in a general directorate of intelligence facility for foreigners. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is offering support to the detainees’ families and is working to secure consular contact with British nationals detained in Afghanistan. The FCDO continues to advise against all travel to Afghanistan based on the security risks, including detention. Tobias Ellwood, chairman of the Defence Committee of the House of Commons, called for a review of the UK’s 20-year mission in Afghanistan following the chaotic withdrawal in August 2021, which he described as a “dark chapter in UK military history”.
