The federal government is still committed to the multi-billion dollar Housing Australia Future Fund, according to industry minister Ed Husic. Despite the Senate rejecting the legislation to establish the fund, the government plans to continue negotiations with the Greens and crossbench senators to secure its passage later this year. The Housing Australia Future Fund aims to finance the construction of 30,000 social and affordable rental homes over five years, but the Greens withheld their vote for the proposal. Independent ACT senator David Pocock and Jacqui Lambie Network senator Tammy Tyrrell are also seeking greater commitments from Labor. Parliament will next sit in May for the federal budget.
