The Toronto mayoral election has been highly anticipated, with 102 registered candidates and multiple debates. However, voter turnout remains uncertain. In the previous municipal election, only 29.7% of registered voters participated. While the resignation of the incumbent mayor, John Tory, generated interest, political science professor Lydia Miljan believes that voter fatigue and lack of engagement are likely factors. Some residents expressed apathy towards the candidates, while others emphasized the importance of exercising one’s civic duty. Despite an increase in advance voting compared to the previous election, final turnout numbers are yet to be determined. Miljan suggests that the high number of candidates may overwhelm voters and deter engagement, as it requires significant effort to stay informed.
