A detective, who was responsible for catching Levi Bellfield, a serial killer serving a life sentence, has called for a change in the law after it was revealed that Bellfield was allowed to get married while in prison. Despite objections, Bellfield threatened legal action and was granted permission to marry his fiancée, whose name has not been disclosed. Retired detective Colin Sutton expressed his dismay on Twitter, stating that it was unfair for Bellfield to exert control over another woman. Sutton recounted an incident when Bellfield instructed his teenage girlfriend to prove she was at home by flushing a toilet while on the phone. Sutton insisted that immediate action should be taken to prevent similar abuses of women from happening in the future. Bellfield, who was convicted for the murders of Milly Dowler, Marsha McDonnell, and Amelie Delagrange, as well as the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, was granted £30,000 in legal aid for his lawyers to argue his right to marry based on human rights legislation. Bellfield’s ex-girlfriend, Johanna Collings, believed he was manipulating his fiancée. Conservative MP Alec Shelbrooke criticized the situation, stating that it was a disgraceful insult to the victims and called for legislation to ban marriages for serial killers. The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the pain and anger that this outcome caused to the families of the victims but explained that current laws did not allow for blocking this marriage. However, they stated that plans were underway to prevent prisoners serving life sentences from marrying through the Victims and Prisoners Bill. This legislation would also prevent anyone with a whole life tariff from having a civil partnership ceremony. Bellfield, known as the Bus Stop Killer, used a hammer to attack his victims, often targeting them at bus stops. He was convicted of Dowler’s murder, who was abducted while walking home from school. Bellfield is not the first serial killer to engage in relationships while in prison. Richard Ramirez, also known as The Night Stalker, had a relationship with Doreen Lioy while on Death Row in California. They married in 1996 but later separated. Ramirez was engaged to another woman at the time of his death in 2013.
