The House of Commons has voted to maintain the hybrid workplace rules that were implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. This allows members of Parliament to attend sittings and committee meetings virtually, as well as vote using an app. The motion put forward by government House leader Mark Holland received majority support from Liberal and NDP MPs, while most Conservatives and Bloc Québécois MPs voted against it. Holland argues that these rules allow MPs to continue their work while also attending to important events in their respective ridings or personal matters. However, critics argue that in-person proceedings lead to better decisions and discussions, and there are concerns about the impact on the health of simultaneous language interpreters during virtual hearings. There have been reports of increased hearing injuries among translators since the implementation of hybrid rules. In response, new regulations have been introduced to standardize the equipment used by committee witnesses and MPs when participating remotely.
