Fracking could resume in the Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory as early as 2024, after the government lifted its five-year suspension. The basin is estimated to hold 500 trillion cubic feet of gas, making it one of the most energy resource-rich areas in Australia. The government has implemented all 135 recommendations made by the 2018Â Pepper inquiry, including the creation of a new petroleum operations unit to monitor compliance. Companies seeking production licenses will be required to submit plans for reaching net zero emissions by 2050. Despite the decision, environmental groups and some indigenous representatives have voiced concerns.
