A majority of Australians are calling for a ban on consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) from receiving government contracts. This comes after it was revealed that the company used confidential government information to create products that allowed clients to avoid paying taxes. Research conducted by the Australia Institute shows that 79 percent of respondents want PwC banned from new government work, with almost half of them supporting a permanent ban. The survey, which interviewed 1,002 Australians from June 6-9, highlights the overwhelming support for serious consequences to be faced by PwC for their breach of integrity and trust. Greens Senator Barbara Pocock, who is leading the government’s investigation into the consulting firm, notes the increasing moral and ethical failures being uncovered. PwC has already stood down nine employees and issued an apology for leaking confidential government information and has directed nine partners to take leave pending further investigation. The scandal has resulted in the departure of 12 top executives from the company.
