The NSW government is offering a $12,000 scholarship to young doctors in regional areas if they agree to work in the public health system for five years. This initiative is part of an effort to reduce the number of graduates leaving the workforce. The scheme will support up to 850 nurses, 400 doctors (with a focus on regional and rural interns), 150 midwives, as well as other workers such as paramedics and physiotherapists. Students who have already begun their studies will also be recognized under a transitionary arrangement and may be eligible for a $8,000 payment upon graduation. The scheme, which is budgeted at $97 million over three years, aims to ensure the retention of talent in the NSW public health system.
