Peter Murrell, the husband of former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, has been released as police continue to investigate the finances of Scotland’s ruling Scottish National Party (SNP). Murrell resigned as SNP chief executive last month following controversy over misleading information about the party’s membership numbers. He was arrested on Wednesday morning in connection with a Police Scotland investigation into the spending of around £600,000 raised by the SNP for campaigning for Scottish independence. Murrell was released later that evening. Sturgeon cancelled a planned appearance at a climate change event on Thursday after the arrest. A Police Scotland spokesperson said on Wednesday that a report would be sent to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service. Sturgeon has said she will “fully cooperate” with police.
