Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised her successor Kevin McCarthy’s historic meeting with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, despite their previously strained relationship during her time as speaker. McCarthy hosted Tsai and over a dozen lawmakers from both parties at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California for a high-level visit, risking further tensions with China, which had threatened retaliation. Beijing viewed the visit as support for Taiwan’s desire to be seen as a separate country and began staging military drills around Taiwan. Despite this, McCarthy vowed to speed up arms deliveries to Taiwan and bolster economic cooperation. China’s foreign ministry condemned the meeting, branding it an “erroneous act of collusion” violating the one-China principle. House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul and other lawmakers are set to meet with Taiwanese business leaders and officials in Taipei this week to discuss strengthening economic and defense ties with Taiwan. McCarthy stated that America’s support for Taiwan would remain resolute and unwavering, and Tsai expressed gratitude for the reassuring support.
