Senior officials from South Africa are visiting the US in an effort to prevent any negative consequences for Pretoria’s increasing ties with China, Russia, and other anti-American powers. The delegation is led by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s national security adviser, Sydney Mufamadi. South Africa’s refusal to condemn Russia’s war on Ukraine has caused concerns and may jeopardize its economic and political relations with the US. South Africa is a member of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which gives duty- and quota-free access to American markets for member countries that subscribe to values considered important to Washington. South Africa is under scrutiny due to its support for regimes including China, Russia, and Iran. The South African government denies being afraid of losing its AGOA membership, but experts suggest that the visit may be indicating a certain level of concern.
