Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has promised tax cuts if her United Conservative Party is re-elected on May 1. She stated that an 8% tax bracket would be introduced for families earning less than $60,000 p.a., resulting in an estimated saving of $760 per working taxpayer earning over $60,000 p.a., or $1,500 per family. Those earning less than $60,000 would see a 20% reduction in their provincial tax bill. The tax cuts have been costed at $1bn, but Smith believes any lost revenue would be offset by growth in other areas such as people migrating to the province and increased corporate tax revenue. If re-elected, the UCP government intends to index all tax brackets to inflation. Other pledges include the extension of a fuel tax holiday and opposition to the federal carbon tax. Alberta has paid off $13bn of debt since the UCP took power and is the province with the second-lowest tax.
