According to meteorologists, smoke from the enormous wildfires in Nova Scotia, Canada, is spreading across hundreds of miles to the United States and affecting cities throughout the northeast. Up to 16,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes in areas surrounding Halifax, Nova Scotia’s capital city. Local wildfires have been spreading quickly due to strong winds, damaging multiple buildings and homes, and the fires, which occur as the Canadian region is experiencing record-breaking heat and dry weather, covers more than 25,000 acres of land. The National Weather Service has warned that a plume of smoke will drift over New York City, potentially leading to reduced air quality. While the smoke has made the skies hazy, it is far above the surface and is not anticipated to cause breathing issues for most people. Although sensitive individuals should avoid being outdoors for an extended period of time, Greg Diamond, a senior producer and meteorologist at Fox Weather, stated that air quality levels would never become hazardous. On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued statements regarding the wildfire situation in Nova Scotia, calling it “incredibly serious” and promising to offer any federal support and assistance required.
