A Russian hacker named Ruslan Magomedovich Astamirov has been arrested in Arizona on charges of wire fraud and intentionally damaging protected computers. If convicted, Astamirov could face up to 20 years in prison and significant fines. Astamirov is accused of being part of the LockBit ransomware campaign, a Russian-linked group known for launching cyberattacks and demanding ransom payments. The LockBit group has conducted over 1,400 attacks, demanded more than $100 million in ransom, and received millions of dollars in payments. The group has targeted various organizations, including state and local governments. Recently, LockBit was responsible for a cyberattack on Managed Care of North America, compromising the personal information of nearly 9 million individuals. Astamirov directly carried out attacks on businesses in Florida, Virginia, France, Japan, and Kenya, with victims paying large sums of money to protect their data. This is the second arrest related to the LockBit group in six months and the third overall. The U.S. Department of Justice is committed to holding ransomware actors accountable and disrupting cybercrime.
