Trains have made history in Sydney by travelling deep under the harbour for the first time, as part of the city’s new metro service. The Sydney Metro City and Southwest Line project is entering its next stage, with new trains travelling across 15.5 kilometres of twin metro railway tunnels up to 40 metres below the surface. The $20.5 billion project will extend the Metro North West Line from Chatswood Station to Sydenham Station, providing a critical connection into the CBD from the north of the city. The milestone is expected to take significant pressure off Sydney’s roads and rail network. Testing and commissioning will continue throughout 2023, with passenger services scheduled to begin in 2024.
