The Environment Minister, Steven Guilbeault, defended the Liberal government’s climate policies, claiming that they are “bending the emission curve”, despite criticisms from the federal environment commissioner over the government’s lack of tracking the effectiveness of greenhouse gas regulations in reducing emissions. Guilbeault cited several environmental initiatives, including investments in clean fuel production and a doubling of electric vehicle sales since last year, as evidence of progress towards the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. However, the environment commissioner’s report, “Emission Reductions Through Greenhouse Gas Regulations”, found that the government was unable to determine the extent to which regulations contributed to emissions reductions and could not confirm if regulations to limit methane emissions had helped reach emission reduction targets. Guilbeault acknowledged that the government needs to improve its tracking methods, but stated that the government is taking steps to address the commissioner’s recommendations and is committed to an ambitious climate plan.
